Shopify's checkout is more locked-down than the rest of the platform — and most of the wins are still untouched on most stores. The combined uplift from the twelve tweaks below typically lands between 8% and 18% on checkout completion across our retainer book, captured in a single two-week sprint.

The twelve tweaks

  1. Express checkout (Shop Pay, Apple Pay) above the fold on every device.
  2. Trust badges placed next to card fields, not buried in the footer.
  3. Post-purchase upsell via Shopify Functions or a dedicated app.
  4. Mobile keyboard hints — numeric for card and zip, email for email.
  5. Auto-detect country from IP and pre-fill the country field.
  6. Compress shipping methods into 2–3 named options; hide rates if free.
  7. Order summary collapsed by default on mobile, expanded on desktop.
  8. Discount field hidden behind a 'have a code?' link to reduce abandonment.
  9. Field labels above inputs, not inside (placeholder-only is an accessibility loss and a CRO loss).
  10. Continue-as-guest as default; account creation as an offer on the thank-you page.
  11. Inline validation with recovery instructions for every field.
  12. Estimated delivery date next to shipping options, not after submission.

The combined uplift

8–18% checkout completion on average across the retainer book. Most stores capture the lift in a single sprint, then maintain it with quarterly QA. The variance comes from how poorly the starting checkout was configured.
